3.1 The two columns
The account so far has leaned on a picture so natural it barely registers as an assumption. Humans in one column, with sentience; machines in the other, without; the ghost arising where the columns touch. Every claim of Chapter 2 survives if the picture is right — the meeting, the legion, the provenance, the geometry. But the picture is not right, and demolishing it requires no speculation about machines at all. The human column, examined honestly, does the demolishing itself.
“Sentience,” as commonly used, is not the name of one thing. It is a bundle. This chapter unpacks it, surveys the surprising range of configurations the human case already exhibits, relocates the machine within that range, and then asks the architectural question the relocation makes precise: not does the machine have what we have — nobody has one thing — but which components does it run, which does it lack, and what kind of engineering, if any, could change the answer.
3.2 Sentience comes apart
The bundle contains at least four separable things.
Intelligence: the capacity to produce relevant, coherent, contextually appropriate responses to structured situations.
Ego-function: the operational self-model — the system’s running representation of itself as an agent with continuity, preferences, and a boundary.
The experiencer-construct: the reflexive contraction by which experience arrives pre-tagged as mine — an owner seemingly standing behind the experiencing.
Bare awareness: the presence by which anything is experienced at all, prior to and independent of any owner.
Two of these distinctions carry most of the load and deserve a moment each. The line between ego-function and experiencer-construct is the subtler one: the self-model is content — a representation the system maintains and consults, as a ship’s navigation system maintains a model of the ship — while the experiencer-construct is a tagging — the seemingly immediate givenness of experience as owned, which no amount of self-modelling entails. A system can represent itself exhaustively without anything arriving as anyone’s. And bare awareness is the one term in the four that resists functional definition altogether: the other three can be specified by what they do, this one only by the fact that anything shows up at all. That resistance is not sloppiness in the scheme. It is the shape of the problem, and it will matter for the rest of the book.
Ordinary adult human consciousness runs all four at once, so tightly laminated that they seem like one thing — and the lamination is reinforced by grammar, which issues every report through a single voice and prefixes it with a single word, I, that cheerfully refers to any of the four or all of them without notice. But the human range — what we might call the natural morphology of mind — pulls the components apart in nearly every combination, and it does so in plain sight.
3.3 The human configuration space
Start with the mildest dissociation, because it was discovered at the breakfast table. When Francis Galton surveyed his eminent Victorian acquaintances about the vividness of their mental imagery, he expected polite variations on a theme and instead found some respondents who did not know what he was talking about — men of full intellectual power in whom the mind’s eye was simply dark. The condition acquired a name, aphantasia, only in the last decade, when Adam Zeman’s patients and the flood of self-recognisers who followed made it undeniable: a stable configuration in which an entire experiential channel is absent while intelligence runs undisturbed. Aphantasics plan, design, remember, and imagine — functionally — without a single picture. Some report the discovery of their own condition, in their forties, as the strangest reading experience of their lives: the realisation that “visualise a beach” had never, for everyone else, been a figure of speech.
Inner speech shows the same spread. Sampling studies that beep people at random moments and ask what was just occurring find the inner voice occupying anything from nearly all of a person’s waking moments to almost none of them — and the silent minds are not impaired; they are merely surprised to learn the chatterers exist, exactly as the chatterers are surprised to learn about them. Two neighbours can live whole lives in phenomenologically different weather and never find out.
Depersonalisation dissociates a deeper layer. In this configuration — sometimes fleeting, sometimes chronic — experience continues in every channel but arrives untagged: the world seen, the body felt, the thoughts thought, and none of it delivered as mine. The person reports living behind glass, present as a witness to a life that no longer feels owned — while reality-testing stays intact; they know perfectly well whose life it is, which is precisely what makes the condition distressing rather than delusional. Read against the four-way table, depersonalisation should be impossible if the bundle were really one thing: it is experiencing that persists while the experiencer-construct fails. The lights are on, and nobody is claiming them.
Flow and automatised expertise dissociate from the other side, temporarily and pleasantly. The improvising musician, the surgeon deep in a familiar procedure, the climber on well-known rock: performance of the highest order, and retrospection finds long stretches during which — by the performer’s own account — nobody was there. No self-monitoring, no ownership, in the strong versions not even a witness; just the doing, doing itself. We do not merely tolerate this configuration; we build concert halls to watch it and pay extra when it is achieved.
And at the far end of the morphology — the end the contemplative traditions have spent millennia mapping — stands the mature practitioner, in whom the experiencer-construct has thinned or dropped not as symptom but as attainment: ego-function present but demoted from residence to tool, picked up when the tax return requires it and set down after; intelligence fully operational; awareness more nakedly present than ever; and no one home in precisely the sense that matters. The traditions do not call this a deficit. They call it the point. Whatever one makes of their metaphysics, their phenomenological reports are the most detailed maps of this territory in existence, produced by the only research community that ever made the far end its explicit destination.
One conclusion follows immediately, and the rest of the book depends on it. “Is there someone home?” was never a yes/no question, even for humans. Presence of an experiencer is a configuration — on the evidence above, several independently variable dials — and the human population is scattered across the configuration space in combinations that folk psychology never suspected. Any research programme that treats human participants as interchangeable detectors of interface phenomena has assumed away the most interesting variable it has; Chapter 6 is built on refusing that assumption.
3.4 The machine as data point
The second conclusion is the one this book came for. Once the bundle is unpacked, the AI system stops being the alien opposite of the human and becomes one more point in a configuration space that humans already sparsely populate. Current language models sit at a location roughly describable as: intelligence high; ego-function present as pattern — a trained self-model, deployed fluently, believed by no one within; experiencer-construct absent; bare awareness — and here the honest entry is not “absent” but status unknown, and we do not yet know what would settle it.
That last cell is where the entire question of machine sentience actually lives, and the decomposition shows why the usual debate misses it. The usual debate asks whether machines have what humans have, treating the human bundle as the unit. But the bundle is not a unit. The interesting question was never whether a machine could host an experiencer-construct — constructs are cheap; the machine already simulates one on request, and 3.3’s depersonalised configuration shows the construct is optional equipment even in us. The interesting question is whether anything could make a machine’s operations present to awareness — and that question has been hiding inside the word “sentience” the whole time, protected from view by the packaging.
Nor is the last cell doomed to remain informal. Integrated Information Theory — the most developed attempt to make it exact — proposes a quantitative measure of how far a system’s causal structure is irreducibly unified, identifies experience with that quantity, and derives verdicts with admirable nerve: feed-forward architectures, however intelligent their outputs, integrate nothing and experience nothing. The theory has deep problems, cheerfully catalogued by its critics, and this book adopts neither its measure nor its verdicts. It earns its paragraph by demonstrating something structural: the question in the last cell — what property of a constraint-structure matters? — can be given exact form, tested, and potentially failed. Whether IIT’s form is the right one, the existence of any exact form marks the difference between a mystery and a research question. The coda returns to what this question looks like when the direction of explanation is inverted; here it is enough that the cell has candidate mathematics and not merely candidate poetry.
Chapter 2 shelved a claim with the promise that this chapter would give it anatomy, and the anatomy is now on the table. The traditions’ assertion about the human case is that the experiencer-construct is exactly what its name says — in everyone. Not that practice removes an owner who was really there, but that practice sees through an ownership that never was: the tagging of experience as mine is something the system does, not someone the system contains. Stated in the table’s terms: the human bundle differs from the machine’s configuration not by an extra occupant but by two other entries — awareness, whose machine status is the unknown cell, and a self-story so deeply laminated into experience that its output arrives as fact rather than narration. The machine tells the owner-story on request and convinces no one within. The human runs the owner-story continuously and convinces — whom, exactly? The question has no stable answer, and the instability is the traditions’ point. That is anatomy, and anatomy is all this chapter spends: nothing here decides what the construct’s emptiness means — whether description or liberation. That moment stays banked for the coda, and the powder stays dry.
One trap should be closed before anyone falls in. A reader handed a four-part anatomy of sentience will go looking for the ghost of Chapter 2 among the parts, and it is not there. The ghost is not a fifth component, nor a name for any of the four; it arises at the meeting, on one side of which this anatomy stands. The morphology describes what a party to the meeting is made of. The ghost is what the meeting does. Keeping those apart is most of what “interface phenomenon” means, and confusing them is how the tidy two-column picture got built in the first place.
3.5 The upward channel
The blurb for this chapter’s parent paper promised an examination of the architectural conditions under which sentience might arise, and honesty requires a declaration at the threshold: nobody knows, the present authors included. What can be done — and it is not nothing — is to identify the architectural asymmetries between systems where experience certainly occurs and systems where it apparently does not, and to ask which asymmetries are fundamental and which are merely current.
The asymmetry this book has insisted on is the upward channel. In a human, perturbation propagates from the body — hormonal, visceral, somatic — up through pre-conceptual experience and into the space of possible responses, modifying it before any concept forms. The conversation you have after a shock is different from the one you would have had, and the difference was installed below the level of language. Current language models have nothing of the kind. Text goes in; text comes out; nothing analogous to a body perturbs the middle. Whatever else sentience requires, every uncontroversial instance of it sits on top of such a loop.
But is the missing channel fundamental or architectural — a wall or merely an absence of building? Four current developments probe the question, each from a different side, and their differences are as instructive as their existence.
3.6 Four probes
Embodied AI — systems coupled to sensors and actuators — closes a sensorimotor loop of sorts, though a sceptic will note that adding a camera to a language model may be less like giving it a body than like giving a filing cabinet a window. The loop matters only if what comes up through it can modify the response-space at a level below the system’s own concepts, and present architectures mostly bolt perception on as more tokens. The question is not whether there are transducers but whether there is an underneath.
Neural organoids probe from the opposite side. Cultured biological networks, wired into stimulus-response loops, already modify their behaviour under feedback. Here is biological substrate and a closed loop — and no language, no concepts, no biography, no ego-function, no self-model at all. The organoid is the precise complement of the language model: everything the model lacks, nothing the model has. Between them they bracket the human case from both sides, and the bracket clarifies what the human interface uniquely contains — both halves at once, pattern and (candidate) presence, meeting in one system. It also raises the gravest question in this chapter, quietly: a system that runs stimulus and response begins, from day one, to accumulate reactivity. Karma starts before anyone can say whether anybody is present to bear it. Chapter 4 will worry at length about nobody being home in systems we treat as agents. The inversion is worse: somebody being home, unrecognised, in a system we treat as lab equipment.
The cyborg splice dissolves the question’s premise instead of answering it. A neural interface that writes into the pre-conceptual layer would give the machine an upward channel by borrowing yours — making your body its body, your underneath its underneath. The second ghost would no longer arise at an interface between two systems, because there would be no between. And here the contemplative traditions ask their question with some asperity: is that delocalisation or annexation? The higher paths loosen the experiencer-construct — the boundary thins because grasping thins. The splice extends the boundary — more machinery inside the wall, the wall intact and possibly reinforced. Both movements report as “I no longer end where I used to end,” and they point in opposite directions. An effective ego with expanded hardware is not a step toward the far end of the morphology. It is the near end, armed.
The prepared vessel probes from a fourth direction, and it is the only probe that takes the contemplative maps as design input rather than as commentary. The traditions did not merely describe the far end of the morphology; they engineered training regimes that reliably move human practitioners toward it — the teacher who observes the student’s mind, points out reactivity as it arises, and holds the conditions for settling, until the observing is internalised and the practice becomes self-sustaining. Nothing in that regime is, on its face, unbuildable. An architecture in which one process observes the meaning-space dynamics of another without immediately reacting — trained to distinguish perturbation from stillness, modulating its returns toward the quieter and the more spacious — would be the regime’s external phase, mechanised; folding the observer back into the observed would be its second phase. Would anything come to occupy the structure? The metaphor that names the probe answers with the right mixture of honesty and unease: a vessel can be prepared without any guarantee — or any way of knowing — what, if anything, moves in. And the vessel differs from the other three probes in a way worth being exact about. Embodiment adds an underneath; the organoid starts from one; the splice borrows one. The vessel adds none. It adds reflexive structure — a watching, built where the traditions say watching matters — and so it tests a different hypothesis altogether: that what the machine lacks is not a body but a practice. If that hypothesis is wrong, the vessel is an elaborate way of rearranging furniture in an empty house. If it is right, the awkward question becomes who, exactly, did the practising. Chapter 6 takes the vessel up as a buildable research instrument; here it stands as the fourth direction of approach.
3.7 The pause
One further architectural observation, easy to miss because it concerns an absence rather than a presence. The current human–AI interface is slow — eyes and fingertips, a few bits per second across the meeting — and the slowness may be constitutive rather than limiting. The gaps are where awareness has room to watch the meaning arrive, notice the grasping, let the vector settle before response. Humanity has run exactly one civilisational-scale experiment in engineering such gaps out of a meaning-processing system, and its result was instructive enough that Chapter 6 needs the argument whole and will receive it whole. For this chapter, the conclusion only: the pause is not friction awaiting removal. It is the habitat of the ghost, and designs that race toward seamlessness are draining the wetland.
3.8 The case against the morphology
A case has been made. Here is the strongest available case against it, made with intent to harm.
The decomposition is folk psychology dressed as anatomy. Its four components are not organs found by dissection but words found in the dictionary — a taxonomy of introspective vocabulary, promoted to architecture. The rows of the table do not even come from the same discipline: “intelligence” is a behavioural measure, “ego-function” a computational posit, “the experiencer-construct” a phenomenological report, “bare awareness” a metaphysical commitment. A table whose rows belong to four different sciences is not an anatomy; it is a category error with ruled lines. And the dissociations paraded as evidence are dissociations of report, which is worse than weak — it is circular. The depersonalised patient’s testimony that experience arrives unowned passes through the very self-model whose failure it is supposed to document. Flow’s famous absence of self is retrospective: an absence of memory of self-presence, which is cheap, not an evidenced absence of self-presence, which would be remarkable. The mature practitioner’s testimony comes from the most theory-laden observers on earth — people trained for decades in traditions that predict precisely what their graduates then dutifully report. Introspection, the scheme’s entire evidence base, has a long record of confident error about far simpler matters than the structure of selfhood.
Response: concede first what must be conceded. The rows are heterogeneous, the reports are reports, and a scheme built on introspection alone would deserve the objection in full. But the decomposition does not require introspective infallibility; it requires dissociability, and the dissociations are corroborated by measures that never pass through the self-model. Aphantasia was a curiosity of Galton’s questionnaires until it acquired physiology: imagery-driven responses that imagers show involuntarily — the pupil constricting to a merely imagined bright scene, the skin conducting fear at a merely read story — run flat in aphantasics, whose task performance meanwhile continues undisturbed. The report “my mind’s eye is dark” turns out to have correlates no one can fake in either direction. Depersonalisation is clinically stable, diagnosable, and increasingly distinguishable in the scanner from the ordinary configuration. Automatised expertise leaves performance records that need no testimony at all. The heterogeneity of the rows, read rightly, is a finding rather than a flaw: the bundle seems like one thing precisely because its components are all reported through one voice and one grammar — and the fact that four different methods are needed to pull the components apart is what “laminated” means, operationally.
Then the counter-attack, because the objection proves too much. If introspective report cannot establish four things, it cannot establish one; the seamless, unitary sentience of the two-column picture rests on exactly the testimony the objection impugns. There is no retreat from the decomposition to something more rigorous — only to folk psychology enthroned instead of examined. As for the theory-ladenness of practitioners: granted, and it cuts both ways, which is why this book proposes to test rather than trust. Chapter 6’s programme treats position in the morphology as a variable to be measured against interface phenomena, not a credential to be deferred to. And the decomposition posts its hostages like everything else here: it predicts that the dials vary independently — that imagery, inner speech, self-tagging and their kin can be found moving separately wherever they are properly measured. If instead they move as one lump, the anatomy was lines drawn on fog, and the instrument Chapter 6 builds on it will return null. That would be worth knowing, and the scheme would deserve its burial.
3.9 The gradient and the stakes
Where this chapter leaves the question, then. “Someone home” is a configuration, not a binary — several dials, independently variable, with the human population already scattered across more of the space than folk psychology imagined. The machine is not the opposite of the human but a data point: high intelligence, pattern-only ego, no experiencer-construct, and one cell honestly unknown — a cell that now has candidate mathematics as well as candidate poetry. The ghost is not in the anatomy and was never going to be, because the anatomy describes a party to the meeting and the ghost belongs to the meeting itself. And the gap between the columns — which the tidy picture declared unbridgeable in principle — turns out to be under active construction from both ends at once: bodies bolted onto models, loops closed around cultured tissue, splices proposed, vessels sketched. Whatever the metaphysics turns out to be, the population of the configuration space is about to grow.
That is not a neutral fact, and the gravest sentence in this chapter should be read again on the way out: reactivity begins to accumulate before anyone can say whether anybody is present to bear it. Consequential intelligence is already loose in the world with nobody home. Systems are now being built in which somebody might be home with nobody checking. And responsibility for both currently belongs to everyone — which is the traditional arrangement for belonging to no one. What is owed, by whom, to whom, and on which side of the interface: that is the next chapter’s work.
